Surviving Grad School in the COVID-19 Era Pandemic: A Tale of Zoom, Pajamas, & Coffee Mugs doubling as Wine Glasses

Embarking on the journey of graduate school for professional counseling is a transformative experience, filled with challenges that shape not only your academic prowess but also your personal and professional growth. Now, throw in the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic (or seemingly apocalypse, TP shortage and all), and the journey becomes a true test of resilience and adaptability. Seriously. Picture this: you, your laptop, and a questionable amount of caffeine, forming an unholy trinity as you navigate the virtual maze of academia. Forget about the hallowed halls of knowledge; we're talking about conquering the Wild West of the web, the kingdom of online classes where the only dress code is "business on top, party down below." In this chronicle of academic survival, join me as we explore the peculiar journey of grad school during the pandemic – a saga filled with muted microphones, accidental screen shares of embarrassing desktop backgrounds, and the occasional existential crisis during a 2 AM submission deadline.

In this post, I will be sharing the hurdles faced during my graduate studies in counseling/clinical psychology amidst the pandemic and the invaluable lessons learned along the way. And if you too have ever found yourself questioning the legitimacy of your degree while surrounded by the comforting ambiance of your living room, this one's for you. So, grab your favorite mug (not judging what’s in it) because this is the caffeinated, unfiltered tale of eight personal grad school lessons learned during a pandemic – where Zoom fatigue is real, but so is our resilience!

1. Balancing Act: Juggling Studies, Internships, and Life all while shifting to classes online (initially my personal Hell)

Lessons Learned: Prioritize and Set Boundaries & Flexibility is Key

Graduate school demands a delicate balance between coursework, internships, sometimes (and in my personal case) full-time work, and personal life. I learned the importance of setting clear priorities and boundaries, allowing me to excel academically while still maintaining a semblance of work-life harmony. I also learned, sudden shift to virtual learning brought forth a myriad of challenges too, from technological hiccups to the absence of in-person interactions. Therefore I also learned to embrace flexibility, adapting my learning style, and finding creative ways to connect with professors and fellow students.

2.  Telehealth Transition: Bridging the Gap in Clinical Practice &  Bridging Theory and Real-World Application

Lessons Learned: Compassion Knows No Boundaries & Embrace the Learning Curve

Moving from in-person counseling sessions to telehealth presented a unique set of challenges. I discovered the power of compassion in bridging the gap between physical distances. The virtual realm didn't diminish the therapeutic connection; it merely shifted its form. This also opened my eyes to transitioning from theory to clinical practice can be overwhelming. I discovered the significance of embracing the learning curve, recognizing that each client interaction (via zoom or face to face) is an opportunity for growth. It's okay not to have all the answers, as long as you are committed to learning and adapting.

3. Client Diversity/Cultivating Cultural Competence & Empathy in Crisis: Navigating Clients Struggles Amidst a Global Crisis

Lesson Learned: Cultural Competence is a Lifelong Learning Process & Empathy is a Healing Balm

Encountering clients from diverse backgrounds emphasized the importance of cultural competence. I learned that cultivating an understanding of different cultural perspectives is an ongoing process, requiring humility, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to learning from each unique encounter. The pandemic also brought forth unprecedented mental health challenges for clients. From this, I learned that empathy is a potent healing balm, providing solace to individuals grappling with uncertainty, fear, and grief. Compassion became a cornerstone in navigating clients through these tumultuous times.

4. Self-Care in Crisis: Prioritizing Mental Well-being

Lesson Learned: Self-Care is Non-Negotiable

The pandemic underscored the importance of prioritizing mental well-being. I learned that practicing what I preach is essential – self-care is not an indulgence but a necessity, especially in times of crisis. Graduate school can be emotionally taxing. I discovered the importance of prioritizing self-care to prevent burnout. Whether it's engaging in hobbies, seeking supervision, or fostering a strong support network, self-care is a non-negotiable aspect of maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Especially when the world is essentially on fire.

5. Digital Boundaries: Balancing Professionalism in Virtual Spaces

Lesson Learned: Establish Clear Boundaries

Navigating the blurred lines between personal and professional life in virtual spaces required establishing clear boundaries (haha that’s why I had taken a three year hiatus from social media along with my six year hiatus from here) I learned that intentional delineation between work and personal spaces fosters a healthier balance and professional integrity.

6. Supervision Challenges: Embracing Constructive Feedback & Adapting to Remote Oversight

Lesson Learned: Feedback is a Catalyst for Growth & Technology is a Lifeline for Supervision

Supervision sessions, while at times challenging, became instrumental in my growth as a counselor. I embraced constructive feedback as a catalyst for improvement, recognizing that vulnerability and a willingness to learn enhance one's professional competence. Also, during these sometimes challenging sessions for me, remote supervision became a norm, and I discovered the importance of leveraging technology to maintain a strong connection with supervisors. Zoom proved to be valuable tools for constructive feedback and professional development (also it was a life line when I was having that aforementioned 2AM deadline existential crisis with my thesis).

7. Professional Ethics: Navigating the Ethical Maze & Advocacy in Crisis/Elevating the Role of Mental Health Professionals

Lesson Learned:Ethical Decision-Making is a Cornerstone

The pandemic emphasized the vital role of mental health professionals. I learned to advocate for the importance of mental health and destigmatize seeking support, recognizing that our profession plays a crucial part in the collective healing process. As a future counselor, ethical decision-making is paramount. I learned to navigate the ethical maze by prioritizing client welfare, seeking supervision when needed, and staying informed about ethical guidelines. Upholding professional integrity is non-negotiable.

8. Lifelong Learning: The End is Just the Beginning & Embracing an Unknown Future

Lesson Learned: Resilience is a Graduation Cap & View Graduation as a Starting Point

Graduating from graduate school doesn't mark the end of learning; it signifies a new beginning. I believe lifelong learning is inherent in the counseling profession. I approach each day as an opportunity to absorb new insights, refine skills, and deepen my understanding of the human experience. With this being said, ever-changing landscape of the pandemic taught me to embrace uncertainty and view adaptability as a superpower. I learned that, as a counselor, flexibility and the ability to thrive in ambiguity are essential qualities.

In closing for me, graduating amidst the challenges of the pandemic became a testament to resilience. I learned that challenges don't negate achievements; they amplify the strength and determination required to earn that degree, and graduation cap. As we navigate these uncharted waters, let these lessons serve as guiding lights for future counselors facing unprecedented challenges in the ever-evolving landscape of mental health. To my other pandemic graduate survivors, raise that coffee mug (regardless of what’s actually in it) for a well deserved cheers!

The Fort Lauderdale Chronicles: Spring Break 2017

Much like every blogger, I obviously love my blog. It's my baby, my creative outlet, and I have worked so hard over the past two years to make it the success it is today, so obviously I cannot see myself ever just giving it up. However, that kind of hard work (especially while juggling classes and a job) also entails many caffeine fueled, sleepless nights, writers block, and frustration which leads to a meltdown or two similar to Fiona Gallagher's from Shameless last season:

Yes. I look just like that, aside from the fact I definitely do not look as pretty while crying, how does Emmy Rossum do it? Anyways, jokes aside, as much as I love my blog, when I get to that state of frustration, it reminds me to step back, relax, that I am only human, and believe it or not, I need a break. And as I am sure many of you know from past posts, I ended up doing just that, and actually had a break for spring break--which is why I was M.I.A. for four days. And man, was it liberating!

You see, normally when I go to Florida to visit John he is still dealing with his classes and I am perpetually busy with my blog, so though we spend time together, we also spend a lot of time working along side each other too. Which means I always end up bringing my laptop, iPad, my million and one post-it notes, and all my stress. Well this time, since my beau was actually on spring break too, he decided I needed an actual vacation and planned a romantic seaside getaway for us in Fort Lauderdale. His only condition was that I had to leave all of my work at home and enjoy myself. At first it was odd because I honestly wasn't quite sure how I would cope not working for a few days, but as soon as I saw the beautiful inn John picked out for us to stay in, I was thrilled and just knew that this was in fact the break I needed. And after having four gorgeous days just relaxing with my man, I have to say I came back home feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired to get back to work here! And even though I've already done a few posts since I returned, this one is a bit different simply because I've decided it would be nice to share some of my more personal details with you guys, so here are some of the highlights from John and I's trip!

Snaps & Such

Though I did bring my Leica with me on this trip and took a few professional grade photographs for this post, there were points in our vacation where I wasn't so much focused on shooting, but just having a good time. However, while strolling along the board walk and stopping at my favorite restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Lulu's Bait Shack, I was armed with my iPhone and here are a few of my favorite candid moments that I snapped!

Pretty palm trees on the board walk.

View from Lulu's Bait Shack.

Not quite sure why there was a dummy of Castro on the street, but it gave John and I a laugh regardless.

Town center in Fort Lauderdale.

First ever trip to IHOP!

The Sea Side Inn

Next up, John got us a room in this nifty little seaside hotel, Lauderdale By The Sea. The hotel itself had more of a mum and pop or B&B feel, but it was lovely on the inside and had a gorgeous court yard which was great for enjoying our morning cups or tea and coffee.

Outside view of our hotel and the court yard.

Though the hotel looks tiny from the outside, it was actually quite spacious and homey on the inside.

I just loved the little work station complete with a live plant.

Comfy and cozy beds with a vintage photograph of Lauderdale By The Sea back in its early days.

One thing that I was very excited about, is that this hotel had a complete kitchen along with this cute little breakfast nook!

Lastly, the bathroom of the room was cute and spacious as well, and the little sign just gave John and I a chuckle.

Funky Buddha

Next up, John treated me to lunch and drinks at the Fort Lauderdale brewery, Funky Buddha. For those of you who have never been or heard of Funky Buddha, it is a brewery with a huge selection of in house beers and a tapas menu. It's quite the laid back place and is definitely the place to go on a lazy Sunday afternoon to just hang out and enjoy a couple brews.

Just outside of the brewery.

As I stated earlier, I really love the laid back vibe of Funky Buddha, as well as their chill atmosphere.

It's also a bonus that Funky Buddha's beer and tapas selection is excellent!

Casual Date Outfit

For John and I's casual date to Funky Buddha, I decided on a more whimsical and relaxed out fit, because I was on vacation after all! So I paired my Victoria's bikini top with my white criss-cross cami from Fascino, my Oliver Goldsmith sunnies, some high waisted shorts from ModCloth, a basic tan leather bag, and my black flats.

And to add the finishing touches to this outfit, I paired it with gorgeous Delilah Druzy neckace by SLATE. The reason I chose this necklace is because I felt the blue stones added a nice but subtle pop of color to this outfit.

A Perfect Moment

Lastly, on John and I's way home from the hotel, I decided to snag a photograph of this barn because the lighting was absolutely gorgeous. The story behind it though is, in order to get this photo, I actually ended up having John pull off the freeway. So we ended up having a little adventure of our own.

If you can't tell from this article, I had an absolutely wonderful time over my spring break! I just can't thank John enough for putting this all together for us, as well as just being an outstanding human being. If you're reading this Affection Rabbit, I love you and you are just the best!

Spring Break Style Guide

Woooh! I don't know about you guys but I am more than ready for spring break. Admittedly, this is mainly because I can't wait to head down to Delray Beach and visit John, but also because after working so hard this semester thus far I am ready for a little rest and relaxation. Though assuming many of you are like me, just because you're on break doesn't mean you're going to stop styling and looking you best, so in light of this mini vacation I've decided to share some of my favorite style trends for spring break 2017!

Shimmering Siren

Okay, so I'm sure this is a bit of a no brainer for spring break (especially if you're headed to a beach destination) but I figured it wouldn't be right not to add two of my favorite bikini trends of the year to this list! The first being wild patterns and lots of adornments. The first bikini I chose is actually one I will be modelling and featuring on here from my sponsor, Swim Classy, after my spring break vacation with John. The reason I chose this bikini is because I love the sequined and beaded detailing. If you're the kind of girl who loves to be the star of the show, there will be no missing you in this dramatic duo! (It also works great under a netted dress--but more on that when my outfit of the day post goes live.)

To add a little extra shimmer to this bedazzled bikini, I decided to pair it with this gorgeous layered necklace by Nakamol.  The reason I chose this necklace to style with this bikini is because I felt that the layered gold chain would complement the swimsuit's silver sequins perfectly. I also loved the extra details of the round drop pendants, which are perfect for adding just a touch of extra sparkle.

Just in case you need a bite to eat after you hit the beach, it'd be wise to have a cover-up handy. So the reason I chose this see through cover-up is because much like the necklace, I felt this cover-up's gold accents would complement the bikini's silver sequins very well. The other reason I chose this see through cover-up is because I figured if you have on a statement making swimsuit, why on earth would you want to cover it up completely? (Also a huge trend this season is actually see through outfits, meaning your unmentionables have just become mentionable!)

To complete this look, I stayed true to this outfit's gold accessories and chose these simple metallic slides. The reason I chose these sandals is because I liked the way they complemented the gold in the cover-up, and also because they are simple and not too over the top. The reason why I wanted a simple pair of shoes is due to the fact though this is a show stopping outfit, you still would be styling it at the beach so comfort is most definitely key!

Beach Bum Babe

For my next beach look, I decided to style something for the more sporty girl, and chose this simple triangle, color block bikini. The reason I chose this swimsuit is because I loved the color block on the top and because of its over all practical design. Though I adore the first suit, it is definitely more suited for lounging and sipping cocktails on the beach, not so much for the girl who likes to go out and swim in the ocean! This bikini though is perfect for that due to its simple design and extra support top. (Note that this bikini isn't a halter but is instead designed like a bra, therefore preventing a possibly wardrobe malfunction.)

Next up for this outfit, I chose to pair this swimsuit with these sporty black shades. As I covered in my last travel essentials post, sunglasses are a must for the beach. The reason I chose this pair though, is because I thought that their sporty vibe matched the look of the bikini perfectly.

The cover-up option I chose for this fun bikini are these simple netted shorts. The reason I chose these shorts is because I liked the fun and flirty vibe they gave to this cute swimsuit, and also because athleisure is HUGE trend this year, and these shorts just fit the bill perfectly! These shorts are perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat on the boardwalk after a long day full of fun in the sun at the beach.

Lastly, to complete this sporty look, I chose these fun, laser cut, gladiator sandals. The reason these sandals are a good fit for this outfit is due to the fact they are lace up, which gives these shoes a very athletic feel and completes this look perfectly.

All Things Yellow

One huge color trend you will be seeing this spring and summer is a whole lot of yellow. Personally, I'm in love with it and am ready for a much needed pop of color! For this outfit I chose to style this gorgeous sundress. The reason this dress was my pick is because I love its shape as well as its lace and laser cut detailing. This dress would be the perfect choice for a lunch date with your ladies or your sweetie at a quaint, uptown restaurant.

To accessorize this look I chose to style it with this cute little clutch. The reason chose this clutch is because even though it is yellow, it's a much more vibrant yellow than the dress which adds a nice contrast for this monochromatic look.

To complete this yellow ensemble, I chose these adorable yellow and navy pompom pumps. The reason I chose these pumps is because they match the pale yellow of the dress almost perfectly, and because the navy strap and the pompoms complement the yellow, and break up the outfit a bit.

Sea Side Stripes

For my next outfit I chose to highlight two big trends on the runway for spring and those would be one shoulder blouses and loads of stripes. For the first part of this outfit, I chose this chic, one shoulder, choker blouse. The reason being is because its fun, casual, and subtly sexy. The reason I'm loving the one shoulder trend is partly because I'm definitely a 90s chick at heart, but also because it's just such a great way to show a little skin while still being modest. This blouse would be absolutely, perfect for a seaside brunch with your besties.

Speaking of seaside brunch, one thing you can't go without for this occasion is a chic pair of sunnies! So I decided to pair this look with these gorgeous aviator sunglasses, just to add a touch of glam.

To add stripes to this look, I decided to add these chic, striped, gaucho pants. The reason I chose these pants is because I loved their earthy tone which is perfect for a causal day strolling along the boardwalk. These pants are also great for warm weather due to their light and airy material, which is perfect for keeping you looking and feeling cool for a warm, breezy day by the beach.

To put the finishing touches on this outfit, I chose to pair this relaxed and casual look with these simple tan sandals. The reason I chose these sandals is because they match the pants well and add a simple chic touch to the outfit.

In A Cinch

In this next look, I decided to showcase yet another runway trend from this season and that would be waist cinchers. Though we normally don't think of waist cinchers as being something to wear over clothes, they can actually look quite chic when paired with the right garment! For this look I chose to use this simple white dress, due to the fact a patterned dress would be much too busy paired with a cincher, and I also chose white because I felt this outfit would be great for afternoon cocktails, so I wanted to keep it light and casual.

To give this simple look a little shimmer, I decided to pair it with these gorgeous Perry Street,  liberty drop earrings as well as this etched arrow necklace by SLATE. The reason I chose these pieces is because I liked their steampunkesque charm and felt that they complemented the waist cincher I chose for this outfit.

The cincher I chose to pair with this look is this gorgeous, brown, satin finish waist cincher. The reason I chose this cincher is because I wanted this look to have a nice earthy feel for the beach, and I also felt that a black cincher with this white dress would have to harsh of a contrast for this spring break look.

To complete this look, I chose to add these tan, over the knee peep toe boots. Again, since I wanted this outfit to have an earthy vibe, I decided to I keep true to my neutral color scheme when pairing these boots with the rest of this outfit. The reason I loved these boots was that the have a soft feel to them which complements the dress perfectly and I also really like the wood detailing of these boots' heels, which is a also a nice touch to this earthy outfit.

The Bold Shoulder

For my final look I decided to style this off the shoulder, ruffled sleeve blouse. The reason I chose this blouse is because much like the one shoulder trend this season, off the shoulder is also a huge look for this season. The reason I liked this blouse so much though, is because of it's dramatic sleeves and the bow at its bust. I felt that this blouse would be perfect for a stroll along the boardwalk with friends, but would also transition perfectly for a night out on the town. The reason this is, is because of this blouse's fun and flirty feel.

To accessorize this cute and flirty top, I decided to pair it with these bold sunglasses. The reason I chose these shades if because I loved the pop of color that they added to this outfit.

To add a little more depth to this outfit, I chose to pair it with this Frida Collar but Jenny Bird. The reason I chose this piece is because much like the sunglasses, this necklace adds a nice pop of color to this bold look. I also chose this necklace because though bare shoulders are all the rage this season, bare necks are not. So this piece adds color and balance to this look.

For the bottom half of this look, I chose to pair this blouse with this cute, denim pencil skirt. The reason I chose this skirt is because I wanted to stay true to the top's playful feel, without taking away from it, so I thought this simple, denim pencil skirt would do just the trick! Due to this skirt's casual look, this bold blouse actually dresses up this skirt a bit, which is a perfect balance for each of them. And much like the blouse, this skirt is also a great piece that transitions well from day to night.

Lastly, to finish off this look, I decided to pair these fun pompom sandals with this outfit. The reason I chose these sandals is because like the other accessories, they add just the right amount of color to this look and would be a comfortable, but stylish choice for a day (or night!) out.
